A Reflection on Australian Fashion Week: Will It Rise to the Challenge?

When I first started at Australian Fashion Week, I wasn’t allowed backstage. As a man, there were concerns about ensuring everyone felt safe in that space. I understood the hesitation, but I also knew I had something to prove. So, I did what anyone with a dream would do: I asked, I begged, and I worked tirelessly to show that I belonged there.

Eventually, I was given a chance. It wasn’t easy, but that opportunity meant everything. From sweeping floors to running errands, I showed up (sometimes 3 hrs early), earned trust, and built relationships. Over time, I became head of backstage—ensuring every show ran smoothly, every model felt secure, and every designer’s vision came to life.

My journey didn’t stop there. Over the years, I worked closely with IMG to produce runway shows during Australian Fashion Week and beyond. These experiences shaped my understanding of collaboration, creativity, and execution. They became the foundation for so much of what I’ve gone on to achieve.

Now, with the departure of IMG as the owner of Australian Fashion Week and its future on a knife’s edge, I find myself reflecting on what it has meant—not just for me but for so many in the industry. It wasn’t just a showcase of creativity; it was a launchpad for dreams. From the industry-led solidarity with young and established designers yesterday, it’s clear that while Fashion Week remains essential to the industry’s heartbeat, it risks losing its pulse altogether if it doesn’t adapt to meet global expectations.

As I look toward the future, I hope Australian Fashion Week continues to evolve, inspire, and foster the next generation of talent—just as it did for me. I also hope to see a return to its roots: an international-facing platform showcasing Australian creativity to the world. While the domestic market and influencer-driven formats have their place, the true strength of Fashion Week lies in its ability to connect local talent with global opportunities.

What are your thoughts on the changes at Australian Fashion Week?
